TypeScript Course
About the Company
The TypeScript Course is an educational platform created by Joe Previte, aimed at teaching developers how to ship TypeScript code that is both faster and safer in a production environment. Joe is based in Scottsdale, AZ, and he started the course in October 2021. The course began as a free email series that quickly garnered over 1,500 subscribers, indicating strong interest and demand for high-quality TypeScript education.
The course offers practical, hands-on lessons that are designed to be applicable in real-world scenarios. Joe's focus is on making TypeScript approachable for developers of all skill levels. The TypeScript Course has been presented in various formats, including full-day workshops at conferences like RenderATL and local meetups such as Phoenix ReactJS, further establishing its credibility and reach within the developer community.
The success of the TypeScript Course can be attributed to its focus on addressing the needs of developers who want to build production-grade applications. By offering practical, applicable knowledge and partnering with experienced educators like the Badass Team, Joe has created a course that not only teaches the fundamentals of TypeScript but also provides valuable insights into best practices and industry trends.
Idea Behind Company
Joe's journey to creating the TypeScript Course is rooted in his unconventional path into software engineering. Initially, he studied foreign languages in college, with the intention of becoming an educator in academia. However, a year into his graduate program, Joe realized that he was on the wrong path. He decided to pivot to programming, teaching himself to code through freeCodeCamp.
As Joe’s passion for programming grew, he began teaching others how to code, which solidified his interest in education. He joined egghead as an instructor, where he successfully launched a course on Vim. Encouraged by this experience, Joe decided to create a course on TypeScript, recognizing its growing importance in the industry. The idea for the TypeScript Course was born out of Joe's desire to make a significant impact in the tech industry by providing high-quality education on a topic that was gaining momentum.
Joe's decision to focus on TypeScript was also influenced by industry trends. The programming community's shift from JavaScript to TypeScript highlighted a gap in educational resources that Joe aimed to fill. By partnering with the Badass Team, he was able to leverage their expertise in creating educational content, while he concentrated on delivering the technical knowledge necessary for developers to excel in TypeScript.
Creating the Company
The creation of the TypeScript Course involved a thorough process of design, prototyping, and validation. Joe and the Badass Team followed a structured approach that began with extensive research to ensure that the course content was aligned with the needs of the target audience. This was followed by a design phase, where the course structure and materials were meticulously planned out. The production phase involved creating the actual course content, which was tested and refined through multiple iterations.
Joe was careful to validate his ideas before fully committing to them. He tested his curriculum at conferences and on social media platforms like Twitter, gathering feedback and adjusting the course content based on user reactions. This iterative approach allowed Joe to minimize risks and focus on creating content that was both relevant and valuable to his students. The partnership with the Badass Team played a crucial role in this process, as they handled the technical aspects of course delivery, such as setting up email sequences in ConvertKit.
Once the course content was finalized, the focus shifted to delivery. Joe and his team ensured that the course was accessible and user-friendly, using tools like Notion for content creation and ConvertKit for email automation. The collaborative efforts of Joe and the Badass Team resulted in a course that was well-received by its initial audience, setting the stage for future growth and expansion.
Launching the Business
The TypeScript Course was launched in phases, beginning with a landing page that offered an email sign-up in December or January, a few months after Joe started writing the course content. Instead of opting for a single major launch, Joe decided to go with mini-launches, where he introduced each module of the free email course separately. This approach allowed him to build anticipation and maintain engagement with his audience over time.
Joe primarily used his Twitter presence to promote the course, as it was where he was most active and had the largest following. He also shared the course in a few private Discord communities, which helped attract about 800 sign-ups during the initial launch phase. To reinforce his brand identity, Joe updated his Twitter bio and cover photo to emphasize his association with TypeScript, further increasing the course's visibility and sign-up rate.
The launch strategy also included plans for organic growth through search engine optimization (SEO). By adding more content to the site and optimizing it for relevant keywords, Joe and his team aimed to attract more users through organic search traffic. Although the launch strategy was successful in generating initial interest, Joe recognized that there was still work to be done in terms of customer retention and attracting a broader audience.
Earnings
The TypeScript Course currently generates about $400 per month in revenue. While this may seem modest, Joe views it as a stepping stone towards larger financial goals. The initial revenue is primarily generated from the free email course and the workshops that Joe has conducted at conferences. These workshops have not only provided a source of income but have also allowed Joe to validate and refine his content for future offerings.
Looking ahead, Joe plans to turn the email course modules into paid workshops, which will provide additional revenue and further validate the content. The next step in the business's evolution is to record these workshops and offer them as a self-paced paid course. This product will be the cornerstone of Joe's business, and he intends to continue refining and expanding it throughout 2023.
Despite the challenges of building a content-based business, Joe is confident in his ability to grow the TypeScript Course into a significant revenue-generating venture. His partnership with the Badass Team has proven to be a key factor in the course's success, allowing him to focus on content creation while they handle the business's operational aspects.
