Solo Female Travelers
About the Company
Solo Female Travelers is dedicated to empowering women through travel, offering women-focused and women-led tours. The company's mission is to create equitable tourism by employing and supporting female guides, artisans, and businesses. By 2023, they had successfully taken 300 guests on tours to 14 destinations, generating over 1 million EUR in revenue.
The company aims to address gender inequalities in the tourism industry, where women are underrepresented in leadership positions despite making the majority of travel decisions. Solo Female Travelers ensures their tours support local economies by partnering with female-owned businesses. This commitment to women's empowerment extends beyond travelers to the communities they visit.
Through their tours, Solo Female Travelers provides safe and enriching travel experiences for women. Their offerings include meticulously planned itineraries, professional female guides, and support for local female entrepreneurs. This approach not only enriches the travel experience but also contributes to sustainable and responsible tourism practices.
Idea Behind Company
The idea for Solo Female Travelers originated from a Facebook group started in 2015 by a friend of Mar Pages and her business partner, Meg. The group aimed to connect women traveling solo, a niche not widely recognized at the time. As the group grew, Mar and Meg took over its management, fostering a supportive community for solo female travelers.
Initially, the group was not seen as a business opportunity but as a passion project. However, as the community expanded rapidly, it became clear that there was a significant demand for resources and support for solo female travelers. This realization, combined with insights from their Solo Female Travel Survey, led to the idea of launching women-only tours to address the challenges women face when traveling alone.
In 2021, the concept of Solo Female Travelers Tours was born. The tours were designed to be not only financially sustainable but also meaningful, aiming to empower women through travel. By focusing on women-led tours and supporting female-owned businesses, Mar and Meg sought to create positive social impact within the tourism industry.
Creating the Company
Mar and Meg leveraged their extensive solo travel experience to curate appealing itineraries for their tours. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, they identified destinations like Tanzania and Iceland, where travel restrictions were manageable. Their first tours were announced through social media and newsletters, receiving an overwhelmingly positive response.
The founders' lack of experience in the tour industry turned out to be an advantage, allowing them to design tours based on customer needs rather than industry norms. Their deep understanding of their community's preferences, combined with insights from their travel survey, helped them craft unique and desirable travel experiences. This customer-centric approach was key to their initial success.
The pandemic also provided unexpected opportunities, as local travel companies were more willing to collaborate with a new and innovative player. By partnering with these local operators, Solo Female Travelers ensured their tours were authentic and deeply connected to the local cultures. This approach not only enriched the travel experience but also supported the local economies during a challenging time.
Launching the Business
By 2021, Solo Female Travelers' community had grown to 150,000 members, supported by a website launched early in the pandemic. Mar and Meg, both experienced bloggers and content creators, initially managed the group and website as a passion project. However, the rapid growth of the community and Meg's pregnancy highlighted the need for a sustainable business model.
Recognizing that a content website alone couldn't generate the necessary revenue, they explored various business ideas. The decision to launch tours was driven by the results of their travel survey and the desire to create a meaningful impact in the tourism industry. They aimed to generate sufficient income to sustain their business and support their mission of empowering women through travel.
A $80,000 grant from Facebook's Community Accelerator in 2021 provided the financial support needed to bridge the gap between launching the tours and achieving profitability. This funding allowed them to hire staff and cover operational costs during the critical early months. The combination of a strong community base and financial support enabled Solo Female Travelers to launch successfully.
Earnings
Solo Female Travelers achieved profitability in its second year, boasting a healthy gross margin of 30%. The company’s growth has been organic, driven by online searches, media mentions, and the active Facebook group. With a monthly revenue of $150,000, the business has successfully capitalized on its strong community engagement and content marketing efforts.
The company's marketing strategy has been highly effective, focusing on organic growth through content and community engagement rather than paid advertising. They have over 70,000 newsletter subscribers and maintain a high open rate, fostering a loyal and engaged audience. Reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations have also played a significant role in attracting new customers.
Looking ahead, Solo Female Travelers plans to expand its tour offerings to new destinations and replace male-owned business partnerships with female-led ones. Their goal is to support exclusively female-owned businesses on all tours. By 2025, they aim to offer trips to 25 destinations, achieve 200,000 monthly website visits, and grow their Facebook community to 500,000 members.
