SiteGPT
About the Company
SiteGPT is an innovative AI chatbot platform designed to create personalized chatbots trained on a website's content. The platform was developed to serve website owners by enabling them to integrate a chatbot that can interact with visitors using the site's specific information. This capability allows businesses to offer a tailored, interactive experience for their users, enhancing customer engagement and satisfaction.
Founded by Bhanu Teja Pachipulusu, SiteGPT has swiftly grown since its inception, reflecting the growing demand for AI-driven customer interaction tools. The company's success is attributed to its unique offering, which fills a niche in the market by allowing website owners to deploy AI chatbots without extensive technical knowledge or resources.
Idea Behind Company
Bhanu Teja Pachipulusu conceived the idea for SiteGPT while working on his previous product, Feather, a blogging platform utilizing Notion as a CMS. Observing the surge in AI content on his Twitter feed, Bhanu identified an opportunity to incorporate AI into Feather, particularly to enhance user interaction with blogs. This led to the creation of a feature allowing users to chat with blogs, which eventually evolved into a standalone product.
Recognizing the broader potential beyond Feather’s customers, Bhanu decided to develop and launch SiteGPT independently. This decision was driven by the realization that any website could benefit from an AI-powered chatbot, not just those using the Feather platform. This pivotal moment marked the transition of the chatbot feature from a component of Feather to the independent SiteGPT platform.
Creating the Company
The development of SiteGPT posed several challenges. Bhanu had to build the platform from scratch, given the lack of available resources or similar products at the time. Initially, the project was a side endeavor with low expectations. However, urgency became a factor as Bhanu observed the rapid emergence of similar products, prompting him to accelerate the development and launch process.
Bhanu focused on creating a minimal viable product (MVP) that included the core functionality: generating a chatbot from a provided website link. This MVP was built using Remix, deployed on Cloudflare Workers, and utilized Fauna as the database. By leveraging existing resources and services, Bhanu managed to keep costs low, with the primary expenses anticipated from OpenAI and Pinecone, the vector database.
Launching the Business
SiteGPT's launch strategy was straightforward and leveraged Bhanu’s existing Twitter following of around 10,000. He announced the impending launch through tweets, building anticipation among his audience. On March 30th, SiteGPT was officially launched with a tweet that quickly gained significant traction, resulting in the first customers within an hour and about 15,000 visitors to the website on the first day.
Following the initial launch, Bhanu further promoted SiteGPT on Hacker News and Product Hunt, where it achieved remarkable success. SiteGPT reached the front page of Hacker News and became the #1 product of the day on Product Hunt, significantly boosting visibility and attracting a substantial number of new users.
Earnings
SiteGPT experienced rapid growth, crossing $10k MRR within the first month and stabilizing around $15k MRR over the subsequent months. However, this growth was accompanied by challenges, including a high churn rate that saw nearly 50% of customers leaving after the first month. Bhanu realized that sustaining long-term success required focusing on acquiring real customers with genuine needs, beyond the initial hype.
Despite the initial hurdles, SiteGPT's revenue continued to grow, albeit more gradually. Bhanu emphasized the importance of finding product-market fit and addressing customer pain points to ensure sustained growth. Today, SiteGPT continues to evolve as Bhanu works on refining the platform to better serve its users and secure a stable position in the market.
