Idea Behind Company
The concept for RailsDevs originated from Joe Masilotti's experience managing a high volume of freelance work. He started with a simple spreadsheet to match developers with job opportunities when he couldn’t take on more work. The spreadsheet proved successful, and Joe saw an opportunity to create a formal platform. He decided to focus on making the developer experience as smooth as possible, believing that if the platform could attract a large number of developers, businesses would naturally be drawn to it.
Creating the Company
Joe Masilotti began by setting a clear goal: make $1 as quickly as possible. He built the initial version of RailsDevs using his existing knowledge of Ruby on Rails, Tailwind UI, and Heroku, launching the prototype in just 15 days with minimal costs. By leveraging his technical skills, he avoided debt and investor pitches. His focus was on freelance and contract opportunities initially, with full-time job features added later.
Launching the Business
The official launch of RailsDevs was an accidental success. Joe’s Twitter post about a technical issue led to exposure from a prominent figure in the Rails community, resulting in early adoption by developers and businesses. Within a month, he secured his first paying customer despite not having a proper checkout process. Building in public through Twitter and GitHub played a crucial role in attracting users and generating interest.
Earnings
Since its launch, RailsDevs has achieved nearly $150,000 in revenue with minimal expenses. The platform's earnings primarily come from hiring fees, which can fluctuate monthly. Joe maintains a lean operation with no employees, working with a few contractors. RailsDevs also contributes to the Rails community and environmental causes, donating a portion of its profits. The platform’s transparency and open approach have contributed to its growth and success.
