Pixels for Humans
About the Company
Pixels for Humans is a consulting firm founded by Heather ONeill, catering primarily to SaaS startups and tech companies. The company emphasizes intentional business practices, aiming to have a positive impact on individuals, society, and the world. They offer a mix of business consulting, leadership coaching, and design services, always prioritizing their core values and maintaining a 4-day work week.
The firm is committed to selective project engagement, ensuring that their values are reflected in every partnership. Their unique approach to business allows them to support both their clients and their own team, focusing on creating a humane work environment and fostering long-term client relationships.
Idea Behind Company
Heather's journey in tech began in 1999 with a course on HTML and CSS, eventually leading her to co-found a web and UX services company, Above the Fold. After closing down this venture in 2014, Heather quickly founded Pixels for Humans, inspired by a coach's suggestion to build a company around her interests, skills, and values.
Pixels for Humans was born out of Heather's desire to create a business that went beyond profit, aiming to make a positive impact. Her experience in the tech industry provided her with insights into building sustainable businesses that prioritize ethical practices and social responsibility.
Creating the Company
Heather transitioned from her first business to Pixels for Humans by initially replicating her previous service models. She soon realized the need for more predictable revenue and developed hours-based retainers for clients. By 2020, she experimented with productized services to better support clients and adapted her retainer model to focus on value rather than hours.
Her business model evolved to include a coaching framework that aligns clients' values with their business decisions. This approach has been consistent since 2019, offering a combination of weekly calls and fixed monthly costs, allowing clients to benefit from her expertise without a full commitment to UX services.
Launching the Business
Pixels for Humans launched shortly after Heather closed her previous business, driven by a client's insistence. Initially, there was no grand announcement or marketing push. Heather relied on her reputation from Above the Fold to gain traction, focusing on building deeper relationships for referrals.
For the first six years, the company's website was minimal, emphasizing relationship-based marketing. This approach proved effective, though eventually, a full-featured website was launched in 2020. Heather's emphasis on genuine connections and trust-building has been central to her business's success.
Earnings
Pixels for Humans has been profitable every year since its inception, with a consistent revenue model thanks to their service-based business structure. The company operates with minimal costs of goods sold (COGS) and maintains financial health by sticking to their values, even turning down substantial contracts that don't align.
Heather's commitment to a 4-day work week and selective client engagement has resulted in a sustainable business model. Future plans include hiring an operations manager, expanding service offerings, and improving marketing efforts to continue growing her coaching roster and client base.
