About the Company

PennyCanny, based in Islamabad, Pakistan, was founded by Uzair Farooq in January 2021. The company specializes in helping online shoppers find the best deals and discounts on a variety of popular stores, including Wayfair, JCPenny, and DoorDash. Customers can access free coupons for fitness equipment from NordicTrack and fashion stores like Ralph Lauren and Shein.

In addition to providing coupons, PennyCanny offers valuable money-saving tips through its blog and social media platforms. The company’s goal is to enhance the online shopping experience by ensuring that customers get the best value for their money. This approach has helped PennyCanny attract a loyal customer base seeking the latest and most effective discounts.

Currently, PennyCanny operates with a team of eleven employees. The company has seen steady growth since its inception and now generates $3,000 in monthly revenue. The combination of a user-friendly website, a dedicated team, and a clear mission has positioned PennyCanny as a reliable source for online coupons and promo codes.

Idea Behind Company

Uzair Farooq’s journey to founding PennyCanny began with his extensive background in front-end and back-end technologies. As a developer, Uzair worked with various technologies, including Node.js, PHP, SQL, JavaScript, Typescript, and React. His professional journey started with Convo, a competitor to Slack, and he also created the open-source library arrive.js.

The idea for PennyCanny emerged while Uzair was freelancing for a major coupon website. During this time, he was hired to build a coupon extension, which gave him firsthand experience in the coupon industry. This project laid the foundation for his understanding of the market and inspired him to create his own coupon platform.

Financial stability from Uzair’s successful investments in cryptocurrency during the 2021 boom gave him the confidence to pursue his entrepreneurial dreams. This newfound stability allowed him to invest in his vision without external pressure, enabling him to focus on building a robust and user-friendly coupon website.

Creating the Company

Initially, Uzair planned to develop a browser extension similar to Honey, leveraging his previous experience. He invested $10,000 from his cryptocurrency earnings to bootstrap the venture, hiring his first employee, a developer, in late 2021. The project, however, faced a significant hurdle when Uzair realized he had neglected the marketing aspect.

Recognizing the challenge of attracting users to a new browser extension without a marketing strategy, Uzair decided to pivot. He redirected efforts towards building a coupon website instead, deeming it more feasible for reaching his target audience. This pivot involved hiring additional resources, including a UX designer and two more developers, to speed up the development process.

Over approximately six months, the team focused on creating a minimalistic and easy-to-navigate website. An SEO expert was brought on board to streamline the website’s structure and enhance its search engine visibility. By December 2022, the PennyCanny website was completed and ready to go live, marking a significant milestone in Uzair’s entrepreneurial journey.

Launching the Business

The launch of PennyCanny was strategically delayed to ensure the inclusion of popular stores and unique promo codes. Uzair wanted to avoid simply copying coupons like other sites and instead aimed to provide genuinely valuable discounts. This required additional time to develop methods for collecting promo codes and training the operations team.

The initial focus was on food brands like Subway and Burger King, as well as delivery apps such as Grubhub, DoorDash, and Just Eat. These choices were based on their widespread popularity among various demographics, including young people, workers, and students. The operations team manually collected and validated coupons by visiting online stores, signing up for newsletters, and utilizing social media channels.

To reach a wider audience, PennyCanny increased its SEO and social media teams, which helped boost website traffic. The company’s strategy of focusing on providing up-to-date and valid coupons paid off, attracting online shoppers searching for discounts. This approach led to a steady increase in traffic and initial sales, marking a successful launch phase for PennyCanny.

Earnings

PennyCanny currently generates $3,000 in monthly revenue, a significant achievement for a relatively new business. The company’s focus on offering up-to-date and valid coupons has been a key factor in attracting and retaining customers. By ensuring that the coupons are effective, PennyCanny has built a reputation for reliability among online shoppers.

The website features around 50 stores, and the traffic has been encouraging. Although the site has not yet reached the one million mark in terms of visitors, the growth trend is positive. Uzair is optimistic about the future, aiming to expand the store listings and enhance the site’s content to attract a broader audience.

Looking ahead, PennyCanny plans to extend its reach beyond the US to include UK and Canadian customers more extensively. There are also plans to revisit the idea of a browser extension, which Uzair believes holds significant market potential. By continuously adding new stores and improving user experience, PennyCanny aims to maintain its growth trajectory and increase its revenue.
