Maynuu
About the Company
Maynuu was co-founded by Aaron D'Cruz and Wafiq, both bringing diverse yet complementary backgrounds to the table. Aaron, 43, is from Singapore and has extensive experience running a restaurant and bakery, which he sold in 2019 to pursue his passion for web development. His deep understanding of the food industry combined with his newfound tech skills laid the groundwork for Maynuu.
Wafiq, 35, originally from Malaysia, has a decade-long career as a software developer and tech lead. He transitioned to working full-time on Maynuu, embodying the digital nomad lifestyle. Despite their geographical differences and the pandemic's constraints, Aaron and Wafiq have collaborated effectively, meeting in person for the first time only in September 2022.
Maynuu's primary mission is to support small restaurant owners by providing a platform to digitalize their menus and streamline online orders. The company helps restaurants manage everything from delivery and takeaway orders to reservations and QR code ordering for in-house customers. This comprehensive approach aims to ease the operational burdens of restaurant owners, particularly during challenging times like the pandemic.
Idea Behind Company
The idea for Maynuu stemmed from Aaron and Wafiq's personal experiences and frustrations with the existing food delivery platforms. Aaron, a former restaurateur, was dissatisfied with the high fees charged by these platforms, which he saw as exploitative towards small businesses. After selling his businesses in 2019, he seized the opportunity to learn coding and develop a solution that he wished had been available during his time as a restaurant owner.
Similarly, Wafiq was driven by the desire to help his brother's café, which was struggling under the weight of hefty commissions from food delivery services. The pandemic exacerbated these challenges, with lockdowns forcing many restaurants to rely solely on takeout and delivery services. Both Aaron and Wafiq independently developed systems to assist their friends and family, unaware of each other's efforts.
Their paths crossed when Aaron stumbled upon a tweet from Wafiq about his online ordering system. Intrigued and facing a coding issue, Aaron reached out to Wafiq for help. This initial connection blossomed into a partnership, and they decided to merge their projects, creating Maynuu. Their shared vision of helping small businesses and a strong commitment to their communities solidified their collaboration.
Creating the Company
The creation of Maynuu involved a hands-on approach to design and development. Aaron began by sketching ideas on paper and quickly built a basic prototype using familiar frameworks and technologies. The initial version of the product was simple and user-friendly, designed to be accessible even to those with limited tech skills. This approach was crucial, considering their target market consisted of small restaurant owners who might not be tech-savvy.
Maynuu's user interface evolved over time, incorporating feedback from early users to enhance its functionality and ease of use. One of the key features is the Excel-like interface, which leverages the familiarity of Excel to make the platform intuitive for users. The system integrates multiple services, such as QR code ordering, reservations, online ordering, and automated delivery, under a single login, simplifying operations for restaurant owners.
As the product matured, Aaron and Wafiq realized the need to build a robust sales and marketing engine to scale their business. They started putting systems in place to streamline these processes, recognizing that their initial, ad-hoc methods were not sustainable in the long run. Despite these challenges, their commitment to continuous learning and adaptation has been a driving force behind Maynuu's growth.
Launching the Business
The launch of Maynuu began with onboarding businesses owned by friends and family. This initial phase allowed Aaron and Wafiq to gather valuable feedback and iterate on their product before opening it to the public. Their decision to launch during the pandemic proved fortuitous, as the demand for online ordering solutions surged. Small businesses, particularly restaurants, were desperate for affordable and efficient ways to manage takeout and delivery orders.
Maynuu quickly gained traction through word-of-mouth, with restaurant owners appreciating the value of a system that did not charge exorbitant fees. Unlike many tech startups, Maynuu did not rely on traditional launch platforms like Product Hunt, as their B2B SaaS product was specifically tailored for the Malaysian and Singaporean markets. Instead, they focused on direct outreach and trade shows to attract customers.
The response from the market was overwhelmingly positive, and Maynuu began seeing a steady stream of signups. However, Aaron and Wafiq soon realized that their initial lack of a formal strategy needed to be addressed. They started experimenting with different marketing approaches and refining their sales processes, learning and adapting as they went along. This iterative approach has been key to their continued success.
Earnings
Maynuu's business model has been profitable from the outset, a testament to its well-thought-out design and the strong market need it addresses. As of September 2022, the company supports its core team with full-time salaries, a significant achievement for a startup. The company has grown significantly, with monthly revenues reaching approximately $3,000 and a growth rate of 200% over the past year.
Looking ahead, Maynuu has ambitious plans for expansion and product development. The founders aim to introduce a consumer app, enhance marketing tools, offer full customization features, and integrate with point-of-sale (POS) systems. They also have their sights set on expanding into other Southeast Asian markets and eventually going global.
One of the most exciting projects on the horizon is Maynuu's evolution into a platform for other platforms. This white-label solution allows entrepreneurs and digital agencies to use Maynuu's technology to launch their niche marketplaces or online ordering systems. This innovative approach sets Maynuu apart from competitors and opens up new revenue streams, reinforcing its position as a leader in the industry.
