CompressX
About the Company
CompressX, founded by Hieu Dinh in January 2024, is a macOS application focused on compressing videos and images effectively. The app stands out by achieving up to 90% file size reduction while maintaining high-quality output. Since its launch, CompressX has attracted over 2,770 customers who have compressed more than 26,000 files, collectively saving over 7 terabytes of storage space.
The app addresses the needs of users who require a straightforward, offline solution for compression tasks. By operating offline, CompressX ensures user privacy, a significant advantage over many online tools that require file uploads. The focus on simplicity and efficiency makes CompressX appealing to a broad audience, from casual users to professionals.
Hieu Dinh, the sole founder, manages the company without any employees, emphasizing a lean operational model. The business generates approximately $2,500 in monthly revenue, indicating a sustainable and profitable venture. Despite its small scale, CompressX has made a notable impact in its niche market, demonstrating the effectiveness of targeted, user-centric product development.
Idea Behind Company
Hieu Dinh's entrepreneurial journey began with Expense Buddy, an expense-tracking app he created and sold in 2022. Following this, he continued to develop side projects, including collaborating with his brother Tony Dinh on Xnapper, a macOS app for taking screenshots. These experiences laid the groundwork for his approach to developing CompressX.
The idea for CompressX emerged from Hieu's full-time role as a lead iOS engineer, where his team used screen record demos to improve code review processes. However, GitLab's 10 MB file size limit for uploads necessitated efficient video compression. Existing solutions, such as FFmpeg, were cumbersome and required manual adjustments, prompting Hieu to seek a more streamlined tool.
Hieu identified significant gaps in the available video compression tools, particularly concerning user privacy, ease of use, and quality retention. Many existing solutions compromised video quality or required online uploads, which posed privacy concerns. To address these issues, Hieu envisioned CompressX as an offline tool that could efficiently compress files while preserving quality, catering to users who needed a reliable and private compression solution.
Creating the Company
The development of CompressX began with a clear focus on creating a minimal viable product (MVP). Hieu leveraged his expertise in the Apple ecosystem, quickly developing a basic version of the app that allowed users to select and compress videos. This initial version, completed in about two weeks, was shared on Twitter, where it received enthusiastic feedback from the community.
Despite the absence of a proper landing page, Hieu's decision to focus on the MVP first proved effective. Users appreciated the app's simplicity and functionality, and some even chose to pay for it, validating the demand for such a tool. This positive reception motivated Hieu to continue refining CompressX, adding new features, fixing bugs, and enhancing performance to prepare for a formal launch.
Throughout the development process, Hieu maintained his full-time job while working on CompressX. Balancing these responsibilities required dedication and efficient time management, often working late into the night. His commitment to continuous improvement and responsiveness to user feedback played a crucial role in the app's development and success.
Launching the Business
In January 2024, Hieu launched CompressX on Product Hunt, preparing extensive marketing materials to maximize visibility. His strategy involved building an audience by sharing progress publicly on Twitter, introducing the app early, and mobilizing support for the launch. This approach paid off as CompressX quickly gained traction, securing the 2 product of the day with 592 upvotes.
The launch day was a significant success, with sales notifications flooding in. The positive response confirmed the app's market potential and highlighted the effectiveness of Hieu's pre-launch efforts. The success on Product Hunt not only boosted initial sales but also increased the app's visibility, attracting more users and generating valuable feedback.
Post-launch, Hieu focused on building a proper landing page to enhance customer acquisition. A follower on Twitter, Kacper, shared a professional design for the landing page, which Hieu implemented. This new landing page featured testimonials, live statistics, and other elements to build trust and attract new customers, further solidifying CompressX's market presence.
Earnings
CompressX quickly became profitable, generating $3,300 in revenue during its first month and approximately $1,500 in subsequent months. With minimal maintenance costs of around $80 per month, the business proved to be financially sustainable. This early profitability underscored the strong demand for a high-quality, offline compression tool.
The app's user base grew steadily, with compressx.app attracting 2,600 visitors and 4,800 page views in a single month. The "Buy" button received 900 clicks from 800 users, resulting in approximately 80 sales. These metrics demonstrated the app's effective conversion rate and the significant interest it garnered from potential customers.
Looking ahead, Hieu plans to introduce new features, such as automatic file compression in monitored folders, to maintain competitiveness. He also aims for CompressX to be re-reviewed and accepted on Setapp, a platform for curated Mac apps. Hieu's journey highlights the importance of rapid idea validation, continuous improvement, and leveraging community feedback to drive product success.
