About the Company

Baxter Inc. was created by Alec Lindsay, who has a background in growing tech businesses and co-founding a VC-backed startup. The company focuses on helping consumers manage their personal Gmail accounts, which often become cluttered with newsletters and other emails. Baxter's main features include unsubscribing from unwanted emails, deleting unnecessary emails, and automatically organizing the inbox with labels.

Despite being built mainly for consumers, Baxter has no specific niche. Alec aimed to solve the common problem of managing an overflowing personal Gmail account. Over time, he hopes to tailor the product to the most enthusiastic users who emerge. Baxter was launched on the Chrome Web Store in October 2022, and within nine months, it achieved $1,000 MRR.

Idea Behind Company

Alec Lindsay's idea for Baxter came from his personal experience during the pandemic. While working at a healthcare startup and managing a home renovation project, his Gmail inbox became overwhelmed with important and trivial emails. This inspired him to create a tool to manage and organize emails efficiently.

He conducted interviews with regular adults to validate his concept, finding that a simple and effective inbox organizer resonated well. This led to the creation of Baxter, a "butler for your inbox." Alec aimed to develop a product that went beyond simple email management to act as a personal dashboard, powered by Gmail data.

Creating the Company

Alec faced challenges in building Baxter, especially with incorporating machine learning for automatic email labeling. He connected with machine learning experts and gathered a dataset of emails to develop a model. Despite the technical challenges and the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Ukrainian firm Data Root Labs successfully created a model that labeled emails with 95% accuracy.

With a functional product that categorized emails into various labels like Health, Finance, and Travel, Alec moved to the next phase: testing and refining Baxter with real users. The initial version of Baxter provided users with a more organized inbox, setting it apart from other email management tools.

Launching the Business

Before officially launching, Baxter had to pass Google's security review to gain access to users' Gmail inboxes. During this period, Alec acquired a Gmail Unsubscribe Chrome extension from Microacquire, which drove hundreds of installs per day due to its excellent SEO ranking. This acquisition proved beneficial for driving initial installs for Baxter.

Following the security review, Alec informed friends and initial contacts about Baxter. The product received positive feedback, and users started installing and using it. The strategy of acquiring the Gmail Unsubscribe extension paid off, providing a steady stream of organic users and helping Baxter generate over $10,000 in revenue within a year.

Earnings

Since its launch, Baxter has grown steadily, with 10% of users from the Gmail Unsubscribe extension upgrading to Baxter. The company focuses on organic growth, maintaining a low customer acquisition cost. Alec plans to redesign the Gmail Unsubscribe extension to drive more users to Baxter and explore paid advertising and SEO content strategies to increase profitability.

Baxter's current revenue is $1,000 per month, with 100 out of every 1,000 monthly users subscribing to a paid plan. Alec aims to achieve profitability within 18 months by optimizing user acquisition and retention strategies. Despite the slow growth, Alec values owning 100% of Baxter, allowing him to focus on product development and long-term goals.
