Bad Day Box
About the Company
Bad Day Box is based in San Diego, California, and was founded by Leeanne Antonio in December 2019. The company focuses on providing care packages for individuals going through difficult times. Each box contains items that promote self-care and well-being, sourced from women-owned, BIPOC-owned, LGBTQ-owned, eco-friendly, and charitable businesses.
Antonio's motivation for starting Bad Day Box stemmed from her personal struggles, including a significant breakup and job loss. The support she received from friends during this period inspired her to create a way for others to show empathy and care during tough times. The concept revolves around offering a thoughtful alternative to traditional gifts, with a focus on personalized self-care
Idea Behind Company
The idea for Bad Day Box was born out of Antonio's challenging experiences and the ways her friends supported her. She realized that everyone has bad days and often there isn’t a suitable card or gift for such occasions. Her friends' thoughtful gestures, such as flying her across the country and taking her on adventures, inspired her to create a product that could offer similar comfort and care.
Antonio wanted to design a brand that reflected the empathy she received. Each box is curated to inspire healing and cater to different needs and demographics, including men and busy moms. The goal was to provide a way for people to send care from afar, ensuring that the recipient feels acknowledged and supported.
Creating the Company
Antonio started by designing Bad Day Box to package empathy and provide self-care. She focused on creating a brand with strong storytelling and visual elements. The boxes are themed to cater to various needs, such as the "Shower Crying" box for busy moms. She wanted to create meaningful gifts that could be easily sent to friends or loved ones going through hard times.
The process involved careful selection of products that align with the brand's values, emphasizing quality and social responsibility. Antonio's background in stretching budgets and focusing on impactful marketing played a crucial role in bringing Bad Day Box to life. Each detail was meticulously planned to ensure the brand's message of empathy and support was clear.
Launching the Business
Bad Day Box was introduced to Antonio's family and friends in December 2019 with two initial products. The planned Kickstarter launch in March 2020 was delayed due to the pandemic, but Antonio pivoted creatively, launching giveaways for frontline workers and finding ways to support other small businesses.
By the end of 2020, Antonio secured financing terms that allowed her to launch eight new boxes. Despite challenges, she successfully launched a crowdfunding campaign on iFundWomen in 2021. This platform provided a supportive community and resources, enabling Antonio to fund her business and pay her designer.
